Here Is My Latest Piece...Finally

This piece was created using a re-purposed window, blue acrylic paint (painted on the back of the window and a little red and yellow on the front flowers), various shades of green, yellow, gold, and purple tissue paper, glued with MOD PODGE Gloss glue.

Love using tissue paper...it is so light, comes in a variety of colors, and it holds together nicely when glue is being applied. I tear strips of tissue paper...and layer it for texture and shading...in the same way I would combine paint colors on a canvas.

I love finding old windows! Those who know me...also know that I love them...and collect them for me when they find them. Love it!!!

Found two old wooden, white framed windows on the side of the road yesterday after dropping off my son at daycare. A great find. Really there were four...but didn't want to look too greedy :-) so I took only two. I hope to begin working on one of them once I write this post. I have the baby asleep...wish me luck!

Coasters on Stone Tiles...Women in Spring Dresses

My Coasters are made on stone tile. I used acrylic paint for the sun, flowers, and head/arms. The dresses are paper cut to my desired shape, expression, and look. I glued the dressed down first with decoupage glue and let dry...then I added the paint. After they are all dry...I sign the backs and spray with an acrylic sealer for moisture protection. Finally...4 felt dots are placed in each of the corners for surface protection!!!

Sculpture Art Dolls

I believe I have written in the past...I create my sculpture art by using plaster paper with warm/hot water, and anything else I can find to use for the body shape, legs and arms.

Her body is made of a small repurposed water bottle. Aluminum foil for the arms and legs and head...and Plaster Paper for the surface. Acrylic Paint, Yarn for hair, fabric for the head scarf, and the portion of an old sweater for the scarf.

This angel was created by using aluminum foil for the body shape, Plaster Paper, yarn for the hair, a repurposed bracelet and earring, fabric paint, and feathers!

Bundle Of Joy

I don't know how the weather is where you are...but it has been snowing a lot where I am. Here is an ice cycle that was on our house. Amazing!!!

I have not been faithful to my blog for many months...to my blog followers and friends, I am sorry.

So many things have been going on. I am still not sure if I am totally out of my little creative funk, but I do see the light at the end of my creative tunnel :-)! I wonder if all artists go though this creative soul search.

My son and husband are doing well. My Joshua is now 2yrs as of Dec. and just a bundle of energy and fun...and work too! My husband is doing fine as well. I am still working and beginging to create again along the way.

My hubby and I have some exciting news. We are expecting our second Bundle of Joy. I am heading into my 5th month, and our new arrival will join our family in July! Looks as if we will be having a little girl!

I made two dolls/sculptures during the snow storm. I can't wait to post them.

Art Piece: Hummingbird in the Garden II

I have been looking so forward to spring. The sun making the days longer...the beauty of the flowers and nature...gaining more energy and more motivation.

This piece was made with five simple tools. Decoupage glue high gloss, scissors, my Oprah magazine/tissue paper, a paint brush to spread the glue, and an old Window.

I searched through the magazine to find the colors that I loved, and I ripped those pages out, ripped them to shreds....finally, I glued my pieces on the window in a design that reminded me of Spring.

All of the elements on this piece are either pages from my Oprah mag. or tissue paper. I save all of my tissue paper from the gifts that I receive...as you can see, you never know when you will be able to use them in a piece of art.

My hummingbirds...I love them...they are made from the shirt that Oprah was wearing in one of her pictures in the magazine.

Art is everywhere!

I like to spread the glue on the entire windowpane. This adds texture to the piece and it also disperses the light in a nice way when this piece is hung in front of a window.

You can create such beauty if you allow yourself to think outside of the box and view ordinary/everyday things in a new way! Let the season of Spring awaken your creativity.

New Mixed Media Art Piece

March was a very eventful month...I have learned a lot...I am now one year older! Although it is not always easy... I am continuing to learn and grow in the areas of mind, body and soul. I truly want to get better as I get older. Well...I have managed to pull myself out of the business of life to show one of the two projects I have created.

This piece started out as a board and chair rail trim...cut to size.. purchased from Home Depot. I combined my love for color, texture and natural elements to create this piece.

I glued the trim around the wood to create a frame before painting the picture...I added the dividing pieces at the very end...before signing the piece.

The flowers are made of plaster paper...(which can be purchased at most craft stores) and window screen. I shaped each flower head using aluminum foil.

Once you have your shapes ready...you cut your plaster paper into strips and soften each piece separately in a dish of hot water...then mold each piece around your flower.

Once the plaster flower heads are semi-dry...poke holes in the centers of them so they can be attached to the board later.

I have found that hammering a nail in the spots that I want to attach the flowers helps to secure them better. I place a flower head over each nail, and I also add glue underneath the flower head for added security. Then I hammer the nail so that it bends over the center of the flower...I later cover that portion of the nail with more plaster paper to create the center of the flower bud.

In this piece you will also see...acrylic paint (background needs to be painted before all other elements can be added :-), accents of stained glass, and tissue paper for some of the blades of grass and turquoise flower heads. I used decoupage for that technique. I like that the colors are a bit muted...when you look at it...I think it has a feel of a pastel or a watercolor...very soft.

This is not the easiest piece to create...but you will be experiencing the best of both worlds...painting meets sculpture. I love demensional art!!!

For now this piece hangs in my dining room...until it is purchased by you =). I have a second piece called "Hummingbird in the Garden II" that I hope to post soon. That one was made on an old window I found on the side of the road...

A little frustrated about this project!

Well I had this mosaic project in mind for many days. I had gathered together all of the broken dishes, broken clay pots, and glass that I had been collecting. I also had these glass circular tiles that I couldn't wait to use. I am not quite sure where the problem came about, but I decided to glue my legs to my mosaic trivet on first.

Then I painted my board because I noticed that you could see the wood through the glass beads. Now that I think about it...this could have caused my problem. The paint may have made the wood too wet...and the wet glue probably added to the moisture too.

Then I began the gluing process. After I had glued my glass onto the board...I noticed a few days later that my wood had warped, causing it not to rest flat on a surface. It has an annoying rock to it now. You know the rocking back and fourth of a table let that is a little too short...and you stick paper underneath it to make it steady...Well that is what I am going to have to do for this piece :-( I had such high hopes for this project. I wanted to post it on my etsy site. Oh well...it will not go to waist...I will put it to good use! Unless Someone desires to have own it! It is still beautiful art! I still am not done yet! I have to continue to clear away the grout (I like to use a paint can opener for that) and maybe add a little more grout in certain areas. Lastly buff the glass a bit to get that shine!!!

Painting Project: "Sunflowers in the Wind"

Okay the time is now to get your paintbrushes out and create ART! I love Sunflowers! They are so BEAUTIFUL to me! I love to sketch them, see them in a fields, in a vase, in paintings, on clothes… I just love them. They make me smile no matter what!

I actually painted this picture two nights ago for my cousin Vikki who lives in Texas! Before I left Texas this Christmas, she asked me if I would paint her a picture for her room! I told her I would and here it is!! :-)

This is a project that YOU can do! Several simple steps to follow, and you will have a beautiful painting to inspire you!

(1) Start out with a very rough sketch!!!

(2) Sketch your design on the canvas with white paint. It doesn't have to be perfect, just sketch well enough for you to have a guide while you paint.

(3) Get a canvas that is a size that you like and feel comfortable working with...

* This is an old canvas that I had. A painting that I never finished :-)

(4) Sketch out your drawing…

(5) Next select a background color.

*I love shades of turquoise, but you can choose any colors you like.

*What I recommend is selecting two varying shades of the same color, in addition to a white gloss paint. By doing this you can play around with shading and depth in your background.

* I have a paint pallet, but I like to use plastic plates over and over again!!!

(4) Just paint the spaces around the sketched image. (You may have to d0 several coats to have a smooth/complete coverage)

(4) Once the background is painted, you can move onto the stems!

(5) Select two shades of Green for depth and shading.

*Begin painting in the stems. You may need to add several coats of the green to get your desired look

(6) Next we will move onto the petals. Select a shade of yellow and orange.

*I like to play around with the shading of the petals because in real life… depending on the lighting and shadows the colors may differ!

*I did take a picture of the white glaze that I also used.

*I use it at times because it blends colors nicely. You just have to make sure that it doesn’t add too much of a white undertone to the color that you are using.

*The Glaze is not mandatory in creating this painting!

(4)Now for the centers of the Sunflower heads! I like to use two shades of brown!

*If you think of a Sunflower… the center always looks a little darker than the outer edges. So keep that in mind as you paint the center(s). You can make them as dark or light as you like.

*Now we are in the home stretch!!!

Look at your painting, and see if there are any areas that need color touchups. A little green here, a little yellow there…

Incredible!!! BEAUTIFUL!!! You are an ARTIST! But you are not Done Yet!!!

Sign your painting!!!!

Now You are done! I hope this painting will inspire you to continue to CREATE!!!

Mosaic Project Step by Step

I typically enjoy creating my mosaic art on wood. I purchase both my wood and my grout from my local Home Depot. I select the type of wood that I want... I like wood that is usually a foot in width, and I then have them cut the plank to the length that I desire. I purchase my stained glass, glass cutter, oil, and snipers from a local Stained Glass shop in Media, PA. Tile can also be used for mosaic projects too. I love the look and beauty of stained glass. I also love the look of the black grout in between the glass because it gives the look of a true stained glass picture.

(1) I select my glass colors and then think of my design.

(2) Cut my glass to the desired sizes...sometimes I like to just break the glass and see the neat shapes that are created. (Always wear safety glasses when handling/cutting glass)

(3)I glue each piece down individually in the design that I want using a tile glue that I purchase from the local craft store.

(4) Now we are at the fun part!!!!!!!

This is the brand of Grout that I use!

I like to use disposable cups or old coffee cans to mix my grout! I don't know the exact consistency of water to grout...but I have learned that you want it not too runny and not too dry...A consistency right in the middle. Sometimes it is hard to know the exact amount needed to cover the surface...so don't be afraid to mix up some more! :-)

Then I add a little grout at one end of the wood...and use my "Grout Spreading Tool" (Sorry I can't remember the official name, but I did pick it up at Home Depot too.) to move the grout across the glass.

You want to make sure that all of the cracks are filled in with grout.

Keep Going! :-)

I can be a messy process... so dress for the occasion!

I usually let it stand for about 15-20 min. before I do any wiping/buffing of the glass. Some mosaic instructions say to wipe with a wet rag to remove excess grout. I typically skip this step because I try not to leave a lot of thick layers of grout on the glass. I remove as much as I can during the spreading process.

Once I have buffed a little and let it dry through the night, I take a paint opener tool and scrap away any grout that may be left on the glass. (You can get the paint opener at Home Depot too, or you can use a screw driver or something like that :-)!

Final Product! I like to paint the edges and the back of the wood to make it a more finished look.

You can add a hook and hang it on the wall, prop it against a wall, or use it as a table centerpiece, or even use it as a radiator cover or you can set candles or plants on it!!!! As you can see, the options are endless!!

A Place of my Own...My Studio

My Studio is on the Third Floor (the Fourth if you count our basement!) I am going to paint these steps oneday with words of inspiration leading up!

I just tried to give a view of the whole space!

These two pictures below are of my supply closet. I have my finished paintings on one side and my supplies on the other. It is amazing how large it is! I love it!

After reading one of my favorite blogs several weeks ago, I left feeling both challenged and inspired to create a place of my own. When my husband and I chose the house that was going to become our first HOME, it was so important to me that it had a place that I could turn into a personal studio/sanctuary!!! Well needless to say, God did answer that prayer, but I had not had or made enough time to clean, organize it, and make it my own...until now.

We need to make time for the things that are important to us, and as artists, we need to have a space to create freely! It took me many days, but I am happy to say that I am done for now. I have a couple other projects that I would like to do in there...but they will get done in due time. Enjoy!!!! My encouragement to you is to create a special place of your own too!

I know that the Christmas Holiday has passed, but I wanted to feature this artist on my blog. These are two handmade Santa Clause ornaments. They were made by using portions of a small branch from a bush, paint, clear protective coating, and cotton. They both have so much expression, and they are truly Whimsical and Fun...bringing life to any tree.

Larry E. Jones is my father! I woke this morning thinking about how much I loved this creative project he did. I know that I have written about the creative women in my family that have inspired my creativity...my father is also added to that list. He has always been good with his hands. When I was younger, he would make frames for my early paintings, building small shelves that would hang on the wall, and I also remember him refinishing old furniture that he would find. He has always been my biggist fan and supporter of my work and my development as an artist!! I love my daddy and he truly inspires me to be a better person!

This piece of sculpture art was created by combining many elements. I used a branch that I had been saving for at least a year from a friends yard:-), silk leaves, and plaster paper which I molded to look liked flower heads. acrylic paint, and a piece of plywood. One day I will have to do a demo of this project technique.

I love this painting because of the way the pieces of wood are placed. I also call this style of painting my snap shot paintings. You've seen those pic. where it may be a persons face, but they have taken individual pictures of the mouth, eyes, lips, etc. and placed them together to create a complete face. You follow me? :-) Anyway, that is what I think about when I create these pieces also.

I love to paint on wood. I simply go to Home Depot and have them cut a board into segments...and when I am ready to create my "sculpture art" I glue the pieces the way that I want them...and then I create. I typically do not know what I am going to paint on my glued pieces of wood until I start painting.

Art on Display

This past Friday, I took my art to a little Sushi Restaurant in Media, PA for their Second Saturday event. Many of the boroughs in my area will have monthly opportunities for local artist to display their works of art :-). The name of the place is called Sweets n' Stuff. Different kind of name...I think they kept the name of the previous business. My paintings will be there of the month of December and picked up on the second weekend in January.

I have one painting that I have not featured on my blog yet..I don't believe, entitled Falling Roses. This is made out of plaster paper, recycled rose stems, silk leaves...all glued to a board. I also used acrylic paint on the flowers and the board. This is a really fun process, and it allows you to combine sculpture with the process of creating a painting.

My Home is My Canvas!

Here are a few pics. from my current house and one from our previous apartment. Keep in mind that I have a baby and a husband. So you may see a little clutter :-)! My home is "lived in"!

I have only shown portions of the kitchen with a picture of my kitchen painted ceiling, the dining room area. I love filling my home with my own art, as well as paintings from my family and other artists. I believe that a white wall or ceiling is a blank canvas screaming for a coat of paint and a cool design!

I wanted to write this blog for two reasons. One because I wanted to give a little glimpse into my home world... and two because I truly believe that you should make any space that you live in a reflection of you! I have heard many people say that they don't want to put up any pictures or paint the spaces that they live in because they are renting or they are afraid to put holes in the walls or they have a fear of paint colors. I say to them...make your space a home. Often times we can have high hopes for a place, but we allow 2,5,10 yrs. to go by with out creating life in our space. Home to me is more than a place where I eat and sleep. I want to have a home that is reflects me and is inspiring to me. I want people to feel warm and at peace when they come over to my house. I want for people to leave inspired and with a vision for their own personal space!

The goal is not to have the most expensive furniture, art, or appliances...the goal is to have a home filled with the things you love. The goal is for people to come into your home and leave knowing a little bit more about you as a person!

Let this new year be a year that you are not afraid to take risks with your home. Maybe you will paint, or buy a new throw pillow for that splash of color!! Go For It!

Chalkboard Art

This chalkboard is one of two. I made two large ones...one for a girl and one for a boy, which is not pictured. This one reminds me of a park with a little pond near by. I have added texture and acrylic paint to this chalk board for added whimsy!! I love creating functional art. You can use it or it can stand alone as art! I have had this piece for about two or more years. I have only put it out for public view on one occasion. I think that I will advertise it, as well as the boy one in the near future. I love using chalkboard paint along with acrylic paint...they are a good match!

What do you think about the most when you are lying alone in the dark. No distractions. No pressures from the world telling you what you should be and or what you should be doing. Usually it is those thoughts in those moments that reveal your true self. Your true passion. So often we can deny that voice and push through life...living the way that we "think" we should be living. But our true self is not being nurtured. My brain is constantly working. I am always thinking about the next creative project! My goals for myself are very high! I truly believe that at the right moment... I will be able to use my gifts of creativity in an incredible way. The difficult part is trusting God's process and God's timing. For me I really feel that the time is now to pursue my passions in life. My son and my husband inspire me to be a woman true to herself and not afraid to live her best life. My best life is Creating work that I love! Live your Best Life Too!

First Fiday Event at Ten Thousand Villages

I had a really great opportunity to be one of two guest artist at Ten Thousand Villages her in Philadelphia. I was able to bring my coasters and journals etc. and really get a feel for how the public reacts to my art! I received a lot of positive feedback and made several sales as well. I will also have an opportunity to display my painting is one of the local restaurants in January. I will put that info on the blog as the date gets closer!

Nursery

It has been a process for me to work on my son's bedroom. It is amazing because I love to paint and create fun and whimsical spaces in other people's homes, but it has been a challenge to get my son's nursery done. I did paint the room blue several months ago, and recently I painted his name on the wall :-). So I was pretty excited about that...but I have greater vision for what I hope to create. I hope that he will not be 18 yrs and on his way out the door before I finish the nursery! Well, he is happy! He doesn't even know the difference! As long as he has his favorite pot and lid to bang together while we are in the kitchen he is Happy!!!! I will keep you posted on the creative process!

Teen Bedroom Project

This is the bedroom of a fun loving teen girl. When we met for our consultation she had already painted her bedroom the vibrant lime green color you see here! I love the color. She said that she wanted to do something with her alcove area in her room. We talked for a bit, and she decided that she would like a magnetic chalkboard, which was painted on with magnetic paint and chalkboard paint in the center and on either side. She also decided that she wanted to use the black magnetic paint so she could hang up pictures of friends and other fun items. I did a 1 or 1 1/2 inch boarder around each of the boards in hot pink and a turquoise color. She also stated that she would like the image of a tree without leaves in black in the background. Too Fun and Too Cute!!!

*If you ever use magnetic paint you need to apply many coats to make sure that the magnetic specks are evenly distributed on the wall. Also I prefer to use the actual paint verses the spray paint for a more even look. I also like to use the small roller brushes to apply the paint. You can use another color of paint on the magnetic paint if desired. The chalkboard paint is black and I believe also comes in green.

It was a pretty big window! I love the vibrant colors and the trees too! Painting in reverse takes a lot of pre- planning because it is more difficult to correct your mistakes. I hadn't painted something this big in a long time. I just felt like I needed it! I enjoyed being alone with my paints, my coffee and my music and just going for it! I look forward to my next painting project.

It is amazing how you can capture both feeling and mood with the eyes. I look at this wolf, and I wonder what has startled him and interrupted his drink of water. All I know is that whatever it was...it better not move.

In the same way... you can tell a lot from a person's eyes. You can tell if a person is happy, sad, worried, tired... What story are your eyes telling?

I am learning that being true to yourself as an artist, is an evolving process. For me, it takes self love, determination, and belief in the gifts that God has given me as an artist to fight the desire to conform. Conform into the type of artist /person that I feel is easily accepted. I am in my 30's now, and I remember my friends and family saying that when you hit your 30's you become less concerned about what others think about you. The insecurities of your 20's are beginning to fade away and your true sense of self is blossoming. I am at the point in my life as an artist that I want to share my creativity with others. It has been a process for me to get to this point. I also know that I want my son to look at his mommy and see that she was not afraid to take risks. I want him to see that his mommy was not afraid to go after her dreams no matter what the outcome. I want to be able to encourage him with his goals and dreams and feel in my heart that my encouragement comes from a place of true experience and perseverance.

Okay... So I was driving to work today and I began to think about all of the creative people that have touched my life and contributed to the woman that I am today!! I decided that I want to focus on being grateful for the little things and begin to pay tribute to the special people in my life! I love the poem "Don't Quit" because it is easy to give up when times get tough! The poem talks about the funds being low and the debts being high! "When you want to smile, but you have to sigh.... When cares are pressing you down a bit, rest if you must, but don't quit!" It is important not to become discouraged by the small bumps in the road. We have to keep on keeping on! So my encouragement for the night is to be grateful for everything God has given you, and "rest if you must... but Don't Quit!"
